Positive impact of Social Media on Teens Today
Hi my name is Aum Sharda, I’m 17 years old and more often these days I hear, read and see more on how social media has negatively impacted my generation, leading us to depression, eating disorders and more. I see myself as part of the age group that has grown up with social media our entire lives from MSN to BBM to Facebook to now with Instagram and snapchat. I’m not disputing the fact that social media has created many issues, but I don’t think this age of social media has been shown the respect it deserves because its provided my generation with so much inspiration and motivation. Being a child born in the 00’s I feel in some respects it gives me different insight on the power and influence of social media as appose to your usual journalist.
I want to start by looking at the impact of YouTube. YouTube was created in 2005 however picked up real attention and started to become more relevant around 2008/9, I started watching YouTube around 2010. From my perspective YouTube has had the biggest impact on my generation, the main reason why is its ability for anyone anywhere can share their passion, thoughts and opinions. This allowed people to find people just like them, one YouTuber I want to look at who I think had a huge impact on at least the boys in my generation is KSI. I started watching him in 2012 at this point Olajide (KSI) was in his late teenagers playing his Xbox in his room, now you may think how can this provide inspiration. It wasn’t necessarily what he was doing in terms of playing games for a living but it was seeing someone who isn’t too dissimilar to you get to do what he loves and this is what I think really resonated with me personally. As time goes on you not only see his success grow but also his maturity and the way YouTube content are created it allows you to create almost a personal attachment to the creators as you see them through there highs and lows as often these creators post almost everything they do. I look at him today and see his success in making movies, tv-shows, music, and was a part of the biggest white-collar boxing event of all time and find it extremely motivating. I look at KSI and I find him inspiring from that point of view in terms of seeing hard work truly pay off and in some respects it’s what motivated me to write this post, looking at him and seeing his ability to comfortably share his opinion without the fear of people’s backlash in some cases is incredible and I hope to carry that forward in my work in the future. To be clear I am not saying KSI and people like him have inspired a generation of kids to sit inside and play Xbox but have inspired us to follow our passions as it can lead to success if you truly follow what you love. To show you don’t need a big investment or a big team around you to make it but love for the craft that you do.
The next social media I want to look at is Instagram, this is a social media since the age of about 13 I use every single day. Instagram although primarily used just to keep up with friends and family still provides me personally with constant motivation. Having the ability not only to follow celebrities but in some respects role models and seeing as I use Instagram everyday allows me to consistently see the lifestyle I want, whether it be seeing nice cars, big houses or exotic holidays it allows me to constantly be motivated without being jealous as sub consciously we are all aware they are celebrities and we know we’ll probably never meet them so there is no jealousy.
Overall with this piece I just wanted to write about the good side of social media in a time where I think there is a lot of negative connotations surrounding it, I would like to mention I am aware and understand the bad side of social media from creating anxiety to cyber bullying, however I think it is important to show people of all age groups that social media is truly something special.
